Aquaterra Social Event
Amsterdam reception in historic building with ties to former New Amsterdam
You are invited to a reception in the West-Indisch Huis in Amsterdam on the second day of Aquaterra 2009. The building housed the offices of the Dutch West India Company, which in 1625 ordered Peter Stuyvesant to build a fortress in New Amsterdam on Manhattan, now the city of New York.
400-year relationship with New York
The location of the West-Indisch Huis is special because 2009 marks the 400-year anniversary of the relationship between Holland and New York. In 1609, Henry Hudson set sail from Amsterdam on an exploratory expedition and sailed into a large bay in North America. He proceeded down the river that still carries his name and where Stuyvesant built a fortress several years later.
Historical meeting room
The social event of Aquaterra will take place in the Meeting Room of the West-Indisch Huis where Peter Stuyvesant was officially appointed the last Dutch Director-General of the colony of New Amsterdam.
