A shared view on the world's largest deltas

A shared view on the world's biggest deltas

In the run-up to the Aquaterra 2009 conference, research institute Deltares investigated the nature, infrastructure, spatial planning and governance of eight of the world’s largest deltas as part of a unique study into their sustainable management and development. It comes as no surprise that these delta regions are economic and ecological hot spots, as this is precisely the problem: They have to make the most of the space available, simultaneously maintaining (or even better enhancing) safety while economy and ecology have opposing interests. The expected climate change adds an extra measure of uncertainty to the mix.

Deltares has researched the various trends and solutions in eight major deltas. The results will be presented as an executive summary to all conference visitors at Aquaterra 2009, allowing them to actively participate in the programme, contribute to the general analysis of delta issues and help find successful solutions. The findings of this working conference will be summarised on the final day in the Aquaterra 2009 statement.
